In a saute pan over medium heat, melt butter. Saute sliced onions in the butter until softened. Grease a 9 X 13 inch pan with butter or margarine.
Line bottom of pan with bread crumbs. Place onions on top of bread crumbs.
In a mixing bowl, combine milk, eggs, salt, pepper and spices together and pour over onions. Sprinkle cheddar cheese over mixture and place in a preheated oven of 350degrees and bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven, cover with a dish towel and let stand for 15 minutes prior to serving.
NOTE:
Two dozen soda crackers (crushed) can be substituted for bread crumbs. If using soda crackers, add a teaspoon of accent or similar seasoning to milk and egg mixture.
