Beef and Tomato Sauce

Comments: May use any ground meat or turkey and substitute tomato puree for tomatoes.
4 | ounces | extra lean ground beef |
1 | teaspoon | oil |
1/4 | cup | minced onion |
1/8 | teaspoon | cayenne |
1/4 | cup | bell pepper -- diced |
1/2 | cup | sliced mushrooms |
14 | ounces | tomatoes, canned |
3 | ounces | tomato paste |
1/2 | teaspoon | sugar |
1/2 | teaspoon | basil |
1/2 | teaspoon | dried oregano |
1/8 | teaspoon | cardamom |
1/8 | teaspoon | pepper |
- In skillet, brown meat and crumble and remove and pour off fat and wipe out pan
- Heat oil and add onion and garlic and saute 2 minutes
- Add mushrooms, bell pepper, and saute 1 minute
- Add tomatoes with liquid, breaking up
- Add paste, sugar, spices and beef
- Bring to boil over medium-high, then reduce heat to low and let simmer
about 30 minutes until it reaches desired thickness
- Serve over pasta
