I just thought of another dish that I served a lot in the '50's and even make it occasionally today. It was a dish my mother made in the 40's during WWII to compensate for not having meat. (Meat as well as other things was rationed.). She presented it in such a way that my brother and I thought it was a "special treat" and we ate it with gusto, never realizing that we were being deprived of meat.
