Sift together the first four ingredients, add butter and mix with finger tips. Add milk and make a batter. Pour batter in the bottomof a buttered pan. Add 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water and add tocan of water packed cherries. Heat until sugar is disolved. Pouron top of the batter and bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes.
