Butter the bread well on one side. Cut each slice into four equal pieces. Layer bread, buttered side up, in a well-greased 1 ¼ quart ovenproof dish, sprinkling raisins and sugar between each layber and on top of the last layer. Beat the eggs and milk together and strain over the bread. Leave to stand in a cool place for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350°.
Sprinkle the nutmeg over the pudding and bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until set and golden brown. Serve hot.
