16 | oz. | tomato sauce |
3 | tbsp. | salt |
1 | cup | sugar (optional) |
1/4 | cup | chili powder |
Sort and rinse beans. Cover with water + 3 inches. Bring to a full boil, boil hard for 30 minutes. Let stand for 2 hours. Drain, add water and chopped raw bacon, return to boil, turn down to low setting on stove and simmer about 5 hours, add the tomato sauce and spices. Continue cooking until beans are very tender, adding water as needed. Scrape bottom of pan often as juice thickens. Use more or less salt as you desire.
