Paradise Fruit Cake

1 box yellow cake mix

2 boxes {4-serving size} instant vanilla pudding and pie filling

1 20 oz. can crushed pineapple in juice

1 cup sugar

4 small bananas -- sliced

1 container {8 oz.} frozen whipped topping -- thawed

Prepare the cake mix according to package directions and bake in a 9 x 13 inch baking pan. Allow to cool slightly.
Meanwhile, make the pudding according to package directions and set aside.
In a small saucepan over medium heat, cook the pineapple with the sugar for 5 minutes, or until the sugar is dissolved.
Pour the pineapple mixture over the warm cake; let cool. Place banana slices over pineapple; cover with the pudding, then the whipped topping.
Top with nuts, cherries, and coconut, if desired.
