Mom's Devil's Food Cake
From the Kitchen of:
Patricia L. Moran
This cake is exceptionally good and I think the only chocolate cake
recipe my mom ever used. She had this recipe in her head and we had to supervise her baking it after we were grown in order to get the ingredients and proper amounts.
1 1/2 | cups | Sugar |
1/2 | cup | Shortening |
2 | | Eggs |
1 | tsp | Vanilla |
4 | tbsps | Hershey's Cocoa (powdered) |
3 | tbsps | Strong Coffee |
1 | tsp. | Baking soda |
2 | cups | Flour less 2 tbsps |
| pinch | Salt |
1 | cup | Buttermilk or sweet milk to which a tsp. of vinegar
has been added and left sit for 5 mins. |
- Blend well together the sugar and shortening .
- Add eggs, vanilla, Hershey's Cocoa, strong coffee and mix well into
sugar/shortening mixture.
- Sift together baking soda, flour and salt.
- Add the sifted ingredients alternately with buttermilk .
- Bake in greased and floured pan. (9 x 13 x 2) or 2 - 8 inch or 2 - 9
inch pans.
- Bake at 350 degrees until pick inserted in center comes out clean or
cake pulls away from sides of pan slightly and leaves almost no imprint in center of top when touched with finger.
- Icing can be any kind.
