Add baking soda and salt. Combine thoroughly with a whisk.
In another bowl, combine the orange juice and crushed pineapple.
Set both bowls aside.
In a mixing bowl, cream together the brown sugar and the shortening. Add the slightly beaten egg and mix until thoroughly blended.
Alternately add the contents of the first two bowls to the creamed sugar, shortening and egg mixture in the mixing bowl until all ingredients are combined.
Fold in nuts.
Spread batter evenly in the prepared loaf pan.
Bake at 350° for one hour or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the loaf comes out clean.
