Preheat oven to 425°. In a large bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Using a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut butter into flour mixture until it resembles course crumbs. Mix together the buttermilk and egg. Make a well in the center of flour mixture. Add buttermilk mixture all at once to well, tossing with a fork until a dough forms. (Do not overmix.) On a floured surface, pat dough into a large square. 1-inch thick. Cut dough into 16 square biscuits. Place biscuits 1-inch apart on a greased baking sheet. Bake until golden brown. Approximately 20 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly.
NOTE: Biscuit dough can be prepared up to 1 month ahead. Cover cut biscuits; freeze until hard; transfer to plastic bags. Before serving, prepare baking sheet as directed above and increase baking time to 25 minutes.
