Cherry Bounce

6 cups fresh cherry halves
1 quart light rum
1 quart water
4 cups sugar
Place cherry halves in a large jar; pour rum over cherries.
Cover and refrigerate 2 to 3 weeks.
Drain; reserve rum in a jar in refrigerator.
Return cherries to jar; pour water over cherries.
Cover and refrigerate 2 to 3 additional weeks.
Drain, reserving water; discard cherries.
Combine reserved rum and water in a jar; add sugar; stir well.
(More or less sugar may be used, as desired.)
Serve over crushed ice or as a liqueur.
Yield: about 1 gallon.
Note: Cherry Bounce may be stored in refrigerator.
